Giantstep deployed XR Live technology for the global K-pop festival celebrations

Creative technology company Giantstep recently deployed its XR Live technology for ‘D'FESTA,’ a global K-pop festival celebrating the 10th anniversary of media company Dispatch Korea, the leading publisher of Korean celebrity news and gossip. Featuring a star-packed K-pop line up (ENHYPEN, TXT, Stray Kids, NCT Dream, NCT 127, TWICE, SEVENTEEN, BTS, and NU'EST), the metaverse event kicked off on April 8th and runs through June 6th. Located in Seoul Forest, the venue features a theatre where fans can screen a music film featuring their favourite K-pop stars, a gallery exhibition of 69 artists photographed by Dispatch over the years, and an immersive virtual reality concert hall where fans can experience a series of pre-recorded live performances from the aforementioned artists.

"Because Dispatch delivers the hottest celebrity gossip and breaking news in Korea, hacking into their database to see what else is hidden there has become a joke among fans,” remarks Jichul Lee, partner/executive creative director at Giantstep. “So, this project started based on that idea – a fake movie where someone has hacked into their server and discovered these undisclosed performances by K-pop artists."

Inflecting Dispatch’s brand identity into the concert experience, Giantstep built the virtual music hall with CG architecture inspired by Dispatch’s logo. Giantstep utilised its own real-time engine-based virtual studio to shoot the concert. The space makes use of the company’s custom-developed A.I-ONE 1 Studio chroma wall and its patented five-sided LED Wall technology, A.I-ONE 2 Studio. Together, these powerful tools enable real-time streams of live performers transformed in dynamic 3D environments.

Giantstep worked closely with Dispatch and Code & Associates from the concept and planning stages of the project. Tasked with immersing the CG performers in fantastical environments not seen in typical concerts, the animated sequences and motion graphics echo magical realism with stunning renderings of Seoul Forest as it has never been seen before. The team looked at every detail imaginable to authentically capture the ambience of a live concert experience – from the sights and sounds of the crowd to Seoul Forest sky, which gets darker as the performances progress. The stage lighting and firecrackers also get more colourful along the same progression of time.

Recently named as one of Fast Company’s Top 10 Innovators for Live Events of 2022, Giantstep has a bold vision for the future of music in the metaverse with its XR technology. The company previously produced virtual concert experiences and content for the K-pop group idol ‘aespa’ in partnership with SM Entertainment and Naver’s live streaming service, NOW.
