Getting to Know Caz McNally-Smith

Creative Outpost chats to producer Caroline McNally-Smith about secret passions, including some useful advice for those just starting out

Getting to Know Caz McNally-Smith

We sat down with Caroline McNally-Smith (or Caz to those who know her), top-of-the-pops producer and supermum! We’ll be finding out about her background and secret passions, including some useful advice for those just starting out.

Caz, over to you!

Q> Hey Caz! Can you tell us how you began your post-production journey?

Caz> I began my post production journey by accident whilst applying for production roles at Ealing Studios. They didn't have any space in production but they did in post so I took that opportunity instead and there it began!

Q> Did you always want to be a producer?

Caz> No, I wanted to be a graphic designer, an on set producer, an actor, a writer, a butcher at one point but I'm happy I ended up post producing in the end.

Q> What attracted you to Creative Outpost?

Caz> Initially it was a smaller outfit than any other place I had worked, so I wanted to be part of the challenge to expand their audio dept, which was relatively new at the time.

Q> Can you name a film or TV show you wish you’d been a part of and why?

Caz> Dirty Dancing. Every (most) women would have wanted to have experienced dancing with Johnny Castle right…? But sound/production-wise I’ll go for The Wizard of Oz, I think it was so ahead of its time in terms of set, sound etc.

Q> If you weren’t working in post, what do you think you’d be doing instead?

Caz> I've taken an unhealthy interest in True Crime in recent years, so maybe crime scene investigation or criminal law or a travel writer living in a hammock.

Q> What are three things you can’t live without?

Caz> Aside from kids etc and all the mushy stuff… My slippers, Yorkshire Tea Bags and a wine glass.

Q> What tokens of advice would you give to someone wanting to break into our industry?

Caz> Check if you actually need to get a degree to do the job you want to do, most jobs start at entry level regardless of your further education and keep knocking on those doors.

Q> When you’re not charming clients and making the best brew in the office, what do you like to do in your time off?

Caz> In my former life - theatre, travelling, gigs, swimming, gym… Now with two kids under four I’m happy cleaning the bathroom whilst listening to my favourite podcast.

Q> Re the Creative Outpost Logo, are you Teal or Orange?

Caz> Hmm… Currently Teal.
