The awards strive to recognise the outstanding work developed and delivered by agencies who are firmly in the driving seat of the work they do

Following a year of significant change and uncertainty which has tested the spectrum of marcomms agencies to their very limits, The Independent Agency Awards is launching to recognise and celebrate the entrepreneurial spirit, creativity and freedom of independent agencies.

The Awards, launched by the Alliance of Independent Agencies and backed by world-leading innovators, Google, alongside ISBA and The Marketing Society, strive to recognise the outstanding work developed and delivered by agencies who are firmly in the driving seat of the work they do.

Winning agencies will win their ‘Wings’ – a trophy representing their freedom. Crucially, every person on the winning team will receive individual recognition for their contribution to the work.

David Atkinson, founder and managing partner of Space, and Chair of The Independent Agency Awards, says: “Independent agencies are free to be judged on their own merits. Free from parent companies, independent agencies were uniquely placed to weather the monumental storm of the Covid-19 pandemic by flexing their agility, flexibility and creativity muscles. The breadth of bold and brilliant campaigns we’ve seen during this challenging year is a testament to that.

“We saw an opportunity to create an Award where no independent agency would be overlooked and where the work of everyone who contributed could truly shine. We look forward to this year’s entries and to awarding the most dynamic agencies and creatives their Wings.”

The awards include 15 categories that span the many disciplines and skills across the independent agency landscape – so every dynamic independent agency will find a category that feels right to them, from PR to advertising, social media to brand experience, and so on. All categories will be judged on Strategy, Execution and Effectiveness.

In addition to these categories, special Freedom Awards will also champion other benefits of being independent. Judges will be on the lookout for standout work that captures the freedom that independent agencies have and how it can benefit clients. Judges will be specifically looking for examples of outstanding agency collaboration, agility, and client service.

Entries will be judged by a hand-picked selection of leaders in their fields, with 50% of judges being clients of independent agencies – including Microsoft, E.ON, British Airways, The Economist Group and NatWest.

Laurence Parkes, CEO Rufus Leonard and Co-Chair of the Alliance of Independent Agencies, will be a judge for this year’s entries. He says: “The last 12 months have been tough for everyone in the agency world. But it’s been heartening to see how resilient the independents have been, their agility, flexibility and creativity making up for the absence of a parent company’s deep pockets. It’s great to be able to celebrate how those very same attributes have helped our clients’ businesses not just survive but thrive. I’d encourage all independent agencies to enter so we can show the world our pivotal role in the bounce-back.”

The standard entry deadline is 11th June 2021.
