Director Emma Miranda Moore has unleashed her latest creation, the captivating short film 'The Champ', a celebration of the joyous interplay and unbreakable bond of different generations.

Renowned for her ability to capture the essence of human connections, Emma drew inspiration from her lively, competitive card games with her extended family spanning generations. "‘We include everyone from the smallest to the wisest and no one pulls their punches when it comes to winning!’ Emma shared.

Emma’s vision was to play on the humour and diversity of ages, reinforced with a strong evocative musical score that perfectly complements the film's emotional highs and lows. "The moment I stumbled upon Carmen's piece, I knew I'd struck gold. Its familiarity exudes joy, builds suspense, and crescendos into an uplifting finale. It's the kind of melody that sticks, making the film truly unforgettable."

Embodying her distinct artistic approach, the film blends realism with cinematic textures, and a core emphasis on authentic performances. Emma shared, "Performance is key here, as ever for me. I love to build heightened worlds but let naturalism shine through in my actors. It keeps things relatable and enables an audience to connect with what’s on screen. Both Jack and Juliet (playing the small boy and his Grandma) smashed it in terms of keeping that realness. Their dynamic is playful and their connection palpable. We built on the idea that they play loads of games together all the time. “

Emma further noted, "Jack infused his character with infectious energy and spontaneity. I intentionally avoided choreography to capture the raw, unscripted movements of childhood. While their rivalry on the card table is fierce, it's heart warming to see their unbreakable bond shining through – something that hits close to home, even with my own family dynamics!"
