Futuristic Films’ Director Richie Smyth has won a prestigious Silver Clio Award for “Best Direction” for his incredibly moving ISPCC (Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children) PSA entitled “I Can’t Wait.” The project is also short-listed for a D&AD Award this year. Smyth accepted his Silver Clio Award at the gala ceremony in New York recently, accompanied by Futuristic Films’ Executive Producer Brendan Kiernan. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cdHb6I0kSiM
“I’ve been working in advertising for some time, and I love it,” notes Director Richie Smyth. “To me personally, the Clios are the Oscars of advertising, so I couldn’t be more thrilled. Having my work recognized and up against such incredible competition really means something.”
Smyth also recently directed a new PSA/short film project for the Animal Humane Society via ad agency Carmichael Lynch, which is receiving rave reviews. A centerpiece of the “Law of the Paw” campaign (an initiative to raise awareness about the important of adopting, spaying/neutering and tagging pets), the short film “Magpie’s Story” follows the journey of a rescue dog named Magpie from a harsh life on the streets to a caring shelter and her adopted home. The piece is filmed entirely from the dog’s perspective. To achieve this affect, Smyth and DP Zoran Popovic attached a small PENTAX Q camera to the vest on Magpie’s back. “Between his Clio award-winning PSA, as well as the short film for the Animal Human Society, Richie has proven that he can direct incredibly compelling emotional content on very different ends of the spectrum,” says Futuristic EP Brendan Kiernan.
“Richie is an incredible talent and person,” agrees Futuristic EP Justin Moore-Lewy. “We are lucky to be in business with him. We have also had great fun making these films, which is really what it’s all about.”
In addition to this Silver Clio Award, the ISPCC PSA “I Can’t Wait” has also received to date: a Gold Award in the “Public Interest” category at this year’s EPICA Awards; a Gold Award at the “Global Best Digital Advertising Awards” in Bangkok, Thailand; a Bronze Award in “TV Cinema/Online Film Direction” at the London International Awards (LIA). It was named “Advert of the Year” on tvads.ie, and listed as the “#1 Ad Worldwide” for 2011 by “Business Insider Magazine.”
