Christmas wouldn't be Christmas without a feelgood ad from Coca-Cola. And this year Framestore is proud to have had a helping hand by creating both CG and 2D effects for the always-iconic campaign.
Directed by Rattling Stick's Steve Cope for McCann Erickson Madrid, this year's spectacular is being broadcast in over 90 countries. We see Father Christmas shaking a NYC-themed snow globe so that all its inhabitants cheerfully slide from scene to festive scene until we end on the traditional heart-warming family Christmas dinner.
Although shooting began way back when in heat of summer, the ad's all-important Christmassy feel was created by filming in a large snow-strewn NYC style studio backlot in Bulgaria. The director captured snow covered exteriors and Santa's cosy workshop all on huge tilting gimble sets. Framestore's VFX supervisor, Chris Redding, was on hand to oversee shots so that the team back in London could integrate the tilting sets and add CG glass globes and cityscapes to the empty wooden snowglobe base which Santa held whilst shooting.
Framestore was also responsible for adding 2D snow effects, removing rigs and cables, creating skies and making a dog cause mayhem amongst the presents. The scenes with Coca-Cola's signature Christmas trucks were created entirely in CG. The grading was completed by Framestore's Dave Ludlam
