Filming Locations That Give You the Chills

Location Spotlight 31 Add to collection

Abroad Flims presents some of the spookiest locations in Hungary for your future horror film

Filming Locations That Give You the Chills

The original horror stories were tales to scare children so that they learn how to behave nicely and to teach about death in a digestible way. Today, horror is an extremely marketable genre in every form or shape. From horror games to podcasts about myths and ghost stories, one can barely choose how to get goosebumps this Halloween season. But we are here to talk about the films and the environments these films are set in: get your comfort blankets, we are going on a trip into the unknown.

The misty and mysterious forest

It’s easier to get lost in the woods than some might think. And even if you are not lost, it can feel like you are going deeper and deeper into the dark. The sounds of the forest do not help with calming down in these situations either.

Grab a flashlight and be careful with where you step, something might get your ankles and drag you into the misty swamps below.

The Cabin in the Woods

At first glance, the cabin might seem to be a sign of comfort, hospitality or a moment of rest on a stressful night. But not in horror films! Is it a haunted house still visited by former dwellers? Is it the go-to place for a restless spirit? Or is it you who have been transported to another world?

The fact that the cabin seems to have been untouched for so many years: not a single beer can or candy wrapper on the floor. It just gives you the chills.

Time travel into the Dark Ages

The age of knights in shining armour, castles and great wars. But also the age of mysteries, fantastic creatures and scary bedtime stories.

Let your imagination run wild in this medieval backlot close to Budapest. Abroad Films recently serviced a macabre feature film and we thought you would appreciate some behind the scene shots.

I dare you to go into these dungeons

If the dark of the night is not scary enough for you, a secret tunnel or just a simple wine cellar might do the trick. Who knows what the candlelight might reveal.

The abundance of Hungarian castles means that there are plenty of cellars and dungeons to choose from if you wish to film with us. No film set in the middle ages is complete without a dark, cold and wet dungeon for the prisoners.

The Gothic Look: the Victorian Castle

No horror list would be complete without the origins of the gothic aesthetic. The near-ruins of the Victorian castle represents a lot of things, from economic to moral decay. It is the perfect location for something deeply disturbing

However… any place can be scary

These locations might look cheerful and harmonic on the outside, but if you dig a little deeper, who knows what horrors you may find. The dissonance of a bright and colourful scenery and a psychologically dark or grim story is a trend we will not forget for a while.

Hope we didn’t scare you too much! Grab a nice cup of tea and listen to some ASMR to calm your nerves. If you have a vision for your next movie project, let us know and we will find the perfect match for it when it comes to locations!
