Even/Odd Taps Former Square Global Head of Creative Justin Lomax as Managing Director

Marketing & PR
Los Angeles, USA
A filmmaker turned creative team leader, Lomax spent a decade with Square, where he led the end-to-end development and execution of the company’s campaigns and content

Creative studio and production company Even/Odd has brought on former global head of creative at Square Justin Lomax as the company’s first managing director. In this new role, he will be focused on strategic growth for the company, including expanding the creative team and director roster, as well as developing key client partnerships. A filmmaker turned creative team leader, Lomax spent a decade with Square, where he led the end-to-end development and execution of the company’s campaigns and content supporting a several hundred million dollar global marketing budget. His unique background traverses nearly every side of the industry, giving him a holistic understanding of the traditional advertising and content marketing processes, gleaned from experience across the brand, agency, production and post sides. Having previously partnered with Even/Odd on several notable projects, including the powerful short film “Exit 12” that was acquired by Fox Searchlight Pictures as part of the the "For Every Dream" series, which earned awards including the Grand Jury Prize at SXSW, The Tribeca “X” Award, and Vimeo “Best of the Year.”

Notes Even/Odd founder/director Mohammad Gorjestani: “We’ve known Justin for years and saw him build one of the premier global creative teams at Square that did so much more than just commercials and advertising and pushed what branded content could be to the point where the work could stand alone outside the realm of advertising. He was one of the most visionary partners we collaborated with, and made a lasting impact on us because he was always raising — not just the bar of creative execution — but how things are made and how they last meaningfully in terms of equity. I personally have never seen anyone as steadfast as Justin in pushing for the best storytelling and creative ideas to emerge out of every opportunity and to push the purpose behind every project. While it may seem anecdotal, a critical piece of tapping Justin for this role was also his deep connection to the culture and community Even/Odd emerged from. Justin’s long-standing creative ties to the Bay Area date back decades — most notably his prolific video collaborations with the late Mac Dre — and throughout the years Justin has continued to invest in the communities we aim to represent as a creative organization. But beyond all this, Justin’s character is what we’re most excited about adding to our studio. He is known for his empathetic style of leadership that every person that has ever worked with him mentions about him. Justin is someone who is constantly trying to bring the best out of each individual he works with. We’re excited to be ushering in a new era of Even/Odd with him.”

“It’s really exciting to get back to my roots in production and have the opportunity to once again be closer to the creative process, and I can’t think of a better place to do that than with Even/Odd,” adds Lomax. “Having had the opportunity to work with their team while at Square, I was inspired by how much passion they brought to elevating the creative process in a truly collaborative manner. Their focus on culture-setting work, community-focused storytelling, and projects woven into the rich cultural tapestry of some of today's most defining topics was something that appealed to me from day one. I’m thrilled to join the team.”

Lomax co-founded Catapult Mediaworks in 2011 with writer/directors Jason Jurgens and James Locke. In just eight months, the company shifted in-house as Square’s first-ever acquisition. As the creative team grew over the years, so did Lomax’s purview, ultimately leading him to the Global Head of Creative role, overseeing all marketing creative activities for the brand in the US and a growling list of international markets.
