ENVY Advertising sound designer Rich Martin has lent his expertise to Channel 4’s celebratory trailer for this year’s Great British Bake Off. In comparison to the emotionally-wrought epic of last year, which Rich also soundscaped, the 2019 promo for the much-loved show is a feel-good celebration of the diverse bakers found across Britain.
Working with Leland Music’s re-recording of The Beatles track ‘All Together Now’, Rich’s sound design amplifies the joie de vivre of the promo, which begins with chaos in the supermarkets as baking fever sweeps Britain in advance of the series. The colourful medley of crazed bakers includes a woman praying to a picture of Paul Hollywood, kids tucking into a giant sandwich, and a giant birthday cake hot air balloon. Alongside the mess that inevitably comes with baking is a celebration of the diversity of British bakers, pulling out all the stops for their wondrous creations.
ENVY Advertising’s sound designer was tasked with creating a fast, fun, detailed, and clear design for the piece which, the sound designer admits, was not an easy mix. Speaking of such considerations for the soundscape, Rich said: “It was a very busy mix and there was a lot of different elements in place, so we wanted to be careful to ensure that as many of the little gags landed as possible. It helped that we were supplied with capable music systems so that gave us an extra element of flexibility.”
Rich’s sound design and arrangement on the 2018 trailer recently saw him pick up a Music + Sound Award for Best Re-Record or Adaptation in a TV Trailer / Promo. His work was also recognised with a Gold at The British Arrow Awards, a Wood Pencil at D&AD, a Bronze at the Kinsale Shark Awards, and a win at the Creative Circle Awards.
