Enter An X-Rated Sci-Fi Fantasy with Yibi Hu's Sex Education Opening Scene

Sex Education is the hit Netflix show that follows a group of high school students as the navigate teenage sex and their own sexuality. The open-minded show centres around Otis, the son of a sex therapist, but encompasses an inclusive range of relationships, sexualities and identities. It all plays out in an alternate universe that mixes lush, sunny Welsh scenery, retro ‘70s and ‘80s aesthetics and touchpoints of classic TV and movie US high schools. It’s a combination that has proven to be a hit – the first series was a hit with over 40 million streams. 

The third series launched last week, and one character who gets some time in the spotlight is sci fi-loving erotica writer Lily Iglehart. The Netflix team has brought one of Lily's stories to life with a gorgeous animated sequence.

Director Yibi Hu and his animation team at Future Power Station in London poke at the boundaries of NSFW in this extraordinary sci-fi/fantasy pre-title sequence for episode 7 of the third season of Sex Education on Netflix.

Yibi Hu comments: “We’re all massive fans of the show so it was super exciting when the season 3 director Runyararo Mapfumo reached out about creating an X-rated opener set in Lily’s sci-fi universe.

“Given the content, it was really important to everyone that we make something as powerfully beautiful as it is sexy. We’ve given this piece so much love and hope the craft and care shine through from every grain.

“It was amazing to work with Runyararo, she’s such a fantastic collaborator, and with a constant exchange of ideas we could really get stuck into the finer details of the look, flow, and meaning of each scene, from character design to building an alien world.

“We’ve been waiting for this to drop for a while now, so can’t wait to see it air during episode 7 of the new series. Not sure if it’s one to show my mum though.”
