Great Guns music video and film director Andy Morahan is collaborating on a project with The English National Opera to film their first thrilling cinema live performance of British Composer Benjamin Brittain’s famous and timeless opera Peter Grimes. He has been commissioned by Empire and ENO Screen to bring his unique style to this production, from the London Coliseum - home of the ENO - to the big screen.
Shot & captured in stunning multiple-camera HD, David Alden’s award-winning production of PETER GRIMES, starring Stuart Skelton, will be streamed live in over 200 cinemas across the UK and Ireland and selected screens worldwide on Sunday 23rd February. The aim of which is to create a unique cinematic experience for audience members across the globe.
In a small coastal fishing village in Suffolk, fisherman Peter Grimes’ apprentice disappears at sea. What happened to the boy? Was Peter Grimes involved? He is questioned in court but no charges are brought against him. The villagers are suspicious of Grimes and believe him to be responsible for the boy’s disappearance. Subjected to a hate campaign, Peter’s state of mind and behavior becomes increasingly unstable. He takes on another apprentice with tragic consequences.
PETER GRIMES contains some of the most evocative music ever written. The wildness of the sea and the instability of Grimes’s mind are superbly reflected in Britten’s music.
Stuart Skelton in the lead role has been described as the ‘definitive’ Peter Grimes, and has performed the role all over the world. Directed by David Alden, PETER GRIMES is one of ENO’s most successful productions. The company is known as the world’s leading producer of Britten’s operas and it was where PETER GRIMES first premiered back in 1945.
“David Alden’s award-winning five star production returns. Conducted by Edward Gardner and starring acclaimed tenor Stuart Skelton. A shattering evening of musical theatre.”
