Last night, the 89th Oscars ceremony took place in the USA. Asghar Farhadi,اصغر فرهادی, the incredibly talented, Iranian director won 'Best Foreign Language Film' for The Salesman. However, Farhadi boycotted the star-studded event in support of all the immigrants banned to enter the US under Trump's Executive Order, also known as the 'Muslim Ban'.
In a great protest to this injustice, the Mayor Of London Sadiq Khan arranged a free open air event in Trafalgar Square where Farhadi's film The Salesman was screened. The event provided an opportunity for everyone to come together and embrace the diversity of London and celebrate the creative talent from all countries, cultures and communities.
As part of the event, NERD Productions London’s budding Animation Director Elmaz Ekrem’s film The Law of the Sea was screened alongside The Salesman, thanks to Screen South, Random Acts and The Mayor of London. It's events like these where we can collectively demonstrate that "London is Open" to creative talent as well as people from all countries and all communities. Khan also added that the city stands with Farhadi and “all those discriminated against because of their nationality, their faith or their background”.
