Today HALAL announces two new additions to its roster of directors. Steffen Haars and Caroline Koning will work on headline projects on an international level.
Steffen Haars has in his decade in the film industry become the definition of canny entertainment. With a trademark sense of humour and a drive to push the boundaries of comedy, his worldwide breakthrough came with the New Kids series produced with HALAL as a duo with Flip van der Kuil in the 00’s.
It became a phenomenon in the Netherlands and abroad, which fuelled the series to develop into two feature films. The box office hits New Kids Turbo, followed by New Kids Nitro, were successes in Belgium, Japan, Scandinavia and China, to mention some, and picked up multiple awards. Steffen’s original, going against the stream approach has unsurprisingly led to multiple brand collaborations.
The director has crafted commercial work for the likes of Domino’s Pizza, Heineken, Lays, National Geographic, MTV and Coca Cola. After a 10-year rampage of comedy, HALAL's lost child came back home in 2018 to join the commercial roster.
Caroline Koning first appeared on the HALAL radar when her graduation film from the esteemed Amsterdam Fashion Institute, AMFI, added up to her first award. This was the beginning of what would mark a shift in Caroline’s focus, bringing with her a multitude of experience from the world of fashion into the craft of directing.
Her first fashion film for Love Stories, ‘Bo’, was featured on Nowness and as Vimeo Staff Pick. The alluring film gained a cult-like following in the northern hemisphere.
With a great deal of curiosity, a whole lot of discipline and a good dose of stubbornness, she quickly grew a portfolio of work including high-profile jobs for the likes of Loewe and Scotch & Soda. In 2017, Caroline was listed in Adformatie's top ten NL emerging talent - a yearly overview from the leading industry publication in the Netherlands.
Gijs Determeijer, Partner at HALAL & Head of Business Development, comments:
“Our industry is fast changing, and to thrive in this ever-evolving marketplace we consistently work towards nurturing our multi-disciplinary talent. Having the right skillset in-house and building a framework in which storytellers can truly flourish is a big part of that equation. We have a holistic approach to content creation, allowing our talent to think outside conventional narratives by moving between disciplines. Steffen and Caroline are both forerunners in their respective genres, and we look forward to keep pushing the boundaries with them. We have had the pleasure to work with them both in the past, and are thrilled to sign them to our ever-expanding roster of global talent.”
