As high school students gear up for college, Deutsch NY and SVA are excited to announce the two recipients of the Fund the Change scholarship. The first of its kind, Fund the Change will provide students with year-round mentorship opportunities, annual paid internships, and is backed with $80,000 in funding by Deutsch NY. The two students, Waverly Johnson of Brooklyn, NY and Michael Barclay of Chicago, IL, will be joining School of Visual Arts as full-time BFA students as part of the Class of 2025. Each will receive $10,000 per year renewable merit scholarships from Deutsch NY, totaling $40,000 for each student over the course of four years.
“Fund the Change is just one piece of our vow to address systemic racism in the industry,” said Dan Kelleher, Chief Creative Officer, Deutsch NY. “What I love about this opportunity is that it provides building blocks for students. Michael and Waverly already show an immense amount of creativity and love for design, and I can’t wait to see what they accomplish over the next four years.”
“I am so excited for the opportunity to work in a creative environment gaining real life experience,” said Waverly Johnson. “I am looking forward to learning all I can from the professionals at Deutsch NY to build my design career.”

In November 2020, Deutsch NY and SVA announced the Fund the Change opportunity in response to the Black Lives Matter movement as a way to support students from historically underrepresented backgrounds and bring more diverse talent to the advertising industry.
