Senior associate, programmatic, on her typical workday and her first ever job

Welcome to Designing with EQ by Carat. In this series we take a closer look at the unique backgrounds, passions, and talents that make up the agency team, and how they come together to design for people and brands.

For November’s edition, we sat down with Senior Associate of Programmatic, Jamika Hamid. Read on to learn more about her and her career.

Q> What does a typical workday look like for you?

Jamika> A typical workday for me depends on if we're currently live with a campaign or not. If not , I am preparing for a campaign launch by setting up and making sure we have everything we need before going live. A lot of QA-ing (Quality Assurance), making sure that everything checks out, there's nothing missing programmatically, and making sure nothing is missing from our line items. More recently, I have been setting up and leading training because we have new hires, which involves teaching them how we do campaign setup, our best practices and things that we would typically need from our activation team.

Q> What is one skill they do not teach you in school that you use every day?

Jamika> I would say public speaking or interacting with people in a professional setting. We learn to interact in school, but when it comes to the workplace, it is a little different to navigate. I think that is something I would have liked to learn in school, but I feel like it is something you learn as you go.

Q> What was your first job and what was the most important skill you learned?

Jamika> My first job was at a law firm, and I was a secretary. Going back to my previous answer, communicating with others was a big part of the role. I learned how to be patient with others and how to actively listen to what they say instead of focusing on what I say in response.

Q> How has your career evolved since you first joined Carat?

Jamika> Carat is actually my first agency job. When it comes to programmatic, I think there is a learning curve because it's not something you can learn online or go to school for, it's something you pick up on the job. I feel more confident in what I do in my day-to-day by learning as I go. I have a greater understanding of not only what I do, but the reason behind what we're doing here. This year I was promoted, so I've taken on more responsibilities, which has been a great evolution in my career.

Q> Tell us about an accomplishment you're most proud of during your time at Carat?

Jamika> After my first six months at Carat, we hired some new people during the setup for a campaign and I was in charge of explaining how to do setup. I had an “aha” moment where it became clear to me that I really understood what I was doing.  When I saw others not only understand what I was explaining to them, but also be able to go ahead and do it, I was really proud.

Q> At Carat, I'm designing for _____.

Jamika> I design for the execution of flawless campaigns and making sure that clients’ media dollars go as far as possible in the most cost-efficient way.

Carat is uniquely positioned to design for people on behalf of brands. Our people are our greatest asset, bringing diverse backgrounds together to bring insight and emotion to marketing. Interested in learning more? Check out the Carat LinkedIn page here.
