The popular video games of the Metal Gear series rank among the best-known and most popular games on the scene. They have not only exciting characters and plots to thank for their worldwide success, but particularly the distinctive artwork of Y?ji Shinkawa, the Lead Character Designer of the game collection. Shinkawa essentially defined the look of the game and raised it to cult status. The Japanese games publisher constantly receives elaborate artwork from fans who love the artist’s style and attempt to imitate and simultaneously honour Shinkawa and his work. The new Web special by Konami serves as a public platform and digital thank you for all those loyal fans. And all these fans now have an opportunity to present their creative talents to the rest of the world. The Web special and the corresponding creative tools are oriented completely on the artistic style of the popular Japaneseillustrator.
Users are given their own virtual drawing board after registering on via their own Facebook or Twitter account. They can then draw and save for all time their favourite characters from ‘Metal Gear’ with the aid of a unique set of creative tools. And, to ensure that users achieve the closest possible approximation to the inimitable style of the popular illustrator, the tool simulates the original utensils as used by Y?ji Shinkawa. In this way, every creativetalent, beginner and professional alike, can imitate the work of their idol and simultaneously enjoy the applause of the fan community as the creative act progresses, because all users have an opportunity to follow the creation of each masterpiece in real time and inspire the artist to new heights with live feed via a chat module. This unusual Web special was conceived and developed by demodern, the digital design studio. The Cologne studio has been working for Konami since 2012, and has already developed and realised the Castlevania - Lords of Shadow 2 teaser website for the Japanese game publisher. Konami became aware of the work of demodern after seeing the ‘Wall of Fame’ Web special the studio designed for edding, the specialists for marker pens. The ‘Wall of Fame’ is an interactive real-time drawing board on which users can watch other users drawing or setvirtual pen to virtual paper themselves. However, in contrast to the ‘Wall of Fame’ concept, the work for Konami stresses the importance of individual talent rather than the creation of a collective artwork.
