David Kolbusz Joins Lightning Orchard as Chief Creative Officer

L-R: Laura Janness, Barney Robinson, David Kolbusz

Independent creative agency Lightning Orchard welcomes David Kolbusz as chief creative officer. An esteemed creative and creative leader, David Kolbusz has built an unparalleled reputation within the advertising industry over the course of his storied career. David’s tenure with Lightning Orchard begins effective immediately.

David was instrumental in transforming Droga5 London into one of the world’s most lauded creative shops, garnering Adweek’s International Agency of the Year in 2020. During his tenure as CCO, Droga5 gained sought-after clients such as Coca-Cola, VW, Amazon, Mini, Barclaycard, and others. Prior to joining Droga5 London as chief creative officer, David was executive creative director at Wieden + Kennedy, New York, deputy creative director/partner at BBH London, and group creative director at Goodby Silverstein & Partners.

The addition of David to LO’s leadership team - which also includes CSO and co-founder Laura Janness and CEO and co-founder Barney Robinson - signals a time of continued growth and expansion for the agency, with multiple, sizable new business wins. LO was awarded Gold in Inc.’s 2021 Best in Business List, and co-founder/chief strategy officer Laura Janness was honored as one of Ad Age’s 2021 Women to Watch.

Says CEO and co-founder Barney Robinson: “David and I both worked at BBH. I distinctly remember our first encounter. I was talking to Nigel Bogle when David came over, chatted briefly and left. As he walked away Nigel turned to me and said: “That guy’s a fucking genius”. I remember it so vividly because it was the only time in 14 years I ever heard Nigel say that about anyone.”

Says Laura Janness, Lighting Orchard co-founder and chief strategy officer: “Having worked with David for a few years in one of our past lives together, I know what an incredible partner he is and I can’t wait to pick up where we left off.”

Of his new position, David says: “You couldn’t ask for two better people to run an agency with. Laura pairs a fierce intelligence with empathy and heart - she is my strategic soulmate and I’ve been trying to work with her again since I left Goodby. And Barney is the best kind of business person. A no-bullshit, high-integrity individual who loves and cares deeply about the work. In just a few short years they, along with the wider team at Lightning Orchard, have set about not only to grow a robust business but also redefine how an advertising shop looks and operates. I’m excited about what we can all achieve together.”

Moving to LO also reunites David with LO ECD Jimm Lasser and CD Conor Dooley, the trio having worked together previously at Wieden + Kennedy NY.

David will take the reins from Jeff Kling, the agency’s cofounder and CCO, who blesses the move.

On the name change, the team says: “While we remain committed to growth at speed, the name Orchard has greater flexibility without the qualifying adjective. Our aspiration is for every piece of communication we make in partnership with our clients to take seed in the minds of our audience and grow in relevance and import, flowering in their hearts. We want to help brands achieve their short-term business objectives, but live long in consumers’ estimation. This is the soul of Orchard. We also have programs promoting growth in other areas, like our diversity program as well as proprietary IP we are creating. Orchard is a more accommodating banner.”

The agency will undergo a visual re-brand in the months to come.
