PRETTYBIRD has announced Steven Caple Jr.’s recent addition to its exclusive roster of creatives for branded entertainment, music content and integrated advertising campaigns. The 31-year-old filmmaker behind Creed II has quickly established himself as a force in the entertainment industry with already one major Hollywood franchise successfully under his belt as well as having been named one of Forbes’ '30 Under 30' in 2018.
As a student at USC’s School of Cinematic Arts, Steven experienced his first big break when his film A Different Tree won the Short Film Competition at HBO’s American Black Film Festival (AMFF). Each year, only five filmmakers of color are chosen to screen their short films at AMFF, making it one of the most prestigious and diverse competitions in the country. His short films have also won awards at the Director’s Guild of America and NBC Shortcuts in addition to many more.
In 2016, Steven debuted his first feature film The Land at The Sundance Film Festival. Executive produced by Nas and featuring performances by Moises Arias, Machine Gun Kelly, and Erykah Badu, the film tells the saga of the underground hip-hop scene in Steven’s native Cleveland. The film was picked up by IFC and released later that summer.
Soon after, Steven’s fellow USC alumnus Ryan Coogler - director of Creed and Marvel’s Black Panther - personally recommended him to take over the franchise’s direction. His passion for raw storytelling helped catapult Creed II to gross more than $200 million at the worldwide box office, exceeding the first installment by nearly 23 percent.
Prior to Creed II, Steven directed episodes of Freeform’s Black-ish spinoff Grown-ish, as well the Netflix Original hip-hop docuseries Rapture, which featured testimonials from multi-talented rappers 2 Chainz, T.I., G-Eazy, and Logic.
Steven has quickly become a fixture in the advertising world, directing campaigns for a host of global brands including Google, NFL, and Delta. Becoming a part of PRETTYBIRD’s hub of creatives was a logical next step in his career progression.
