Dhamirah Coombes, assistant music supervisor at Leland, discusses her top two finds.
Robert Glasper is one of my all time favourite musicians. His music is the embodiment of everything I love about Jazz & R&B, with those signature jazz / gospel chord progressions that reach right in and touch your soul and of course a long list of incredible collaborators.
A rich and luscious tapestry of Jazz, smooth R&B and hip-hop. Aah Woah (feat. Muhsinah & Queen Sheba) This is the perfect example for me, of the Glasper sound. Layered dreamy vocals, driving percussion, sensual chord progressions and samples, which is exactly what drew me into his music. Feels like a track for a Spike Lee film.
I was lucky enough to grow up with parents who have extremely good taste in music, they opened my eyes to sounds from all over the world, so when I saw the Tinariwen album I was immediately drawn to listen to it.
Already a fan of Desert Blues, this is a genre I'm always excited to explore and this album is amazing. Exhilarating, atmospheric and cinematic. The cover alone draws you in and the music takes you through a tapestry of rhythms and energies with an overall extreme slickness that can only be pulled off in Desert Blues.
The Arabic melodies melded with riffing electric guitars makes for a high energy and somehow also laid back sound. I like the difference in pace of this track and how it lives subtly amongst the other pretty high energy songs. That husky, controlled, emotive vocal over the slowed riffing and singular bass line make for a pretty cinematic sound. This track warrants a visually impressive film with immaculate story telling.
