COMPULSORY Welcomes Florian Joahn to Worldwide Roster

The East-German born, London based artist’s work borders photography, art and moving image. His work bridges the sensual and the surreal, exploring themes as delicate and intricate as the feminine side of black masculinity, queer and transgender cultures across the world and race. Across his work in fashion and personal portraiture projects he uses the camera to capture a dialogue between himself and his subjects.

Florian has created visuals for brands and publications such as Nike, Fenty, Vogue Italia, Guiseppe Zanotti, Foam Museum, CNN, Ninamounah, KAF & Glamcult and worked with artists such as Skepta, Akwasi, Rita Ora and Yussef Dayes.

Florian's film 'Hormones are my Master' in 2018 staked his move from photography into filmmaking with grace, setting the unique tone for his work to come. Around the same time he also co-directed the 2018, COMPULSORY produced, documentary ‘Whypipo: Mykki Blanco Speaks About Race in Whiteface’ commissioned by Dazed Magazine to depict the reality of racial bias across the world.

As COMPULSORY’s first signing of the new year, Florian joins their varied roster of international talent which includes directors, photographers, writers and creative directors. Described as a 'formidable force that the industry can trust' by LBB’s Alex Reeves.

COMPULSORY Partner and EP Kadri Mahmoud said about the signing:

"COMPULSORY has built a reputation around introducing new, powerful talent that can both change the industry and shape its future. We recognise Florian as a major part of that incentive for 2020, pushing the seasoned photographer into moving image.

Florian's healthy career in fashion and photography perfectly aligns his taste as a unique creative force with COMPULSORY's appetite for compelling filmmaking - across music, content, commercials and film - all of which we are excited to catalyse with him. It is an incredibly exciting start to the year, and I'm looking forward to announcing more of his upcoming work with us."
