Compass Rose: Mapping Out a New Service Production Model

Company Profiles 55 Add to collection

Forget what you know about service networks... MD and executive producer, Pavla Burgetova Callegari, breaks down her company’s concierge approach that comes at no cost to production companies

Compass Rose: Mapping Out a New Service Production Model

Compass Rose is a one-stop-shop in the space of global service production. In fact, Compass Rose is the first port of call for numerous production companies when an overseas shoot lands on their desks. That’s because it wants to hear any and all questions on a production company’s mind, confident that it will either know the answer or find one in no time at all. Compass Rose is then a production resource, which allows producers to supercharge their projects by tapping into the encyclopaedic experience and knowledge of Pavla Burgetova Callegari, CR’s MD and global executive producer, Amy Kaemon, executive producer, North America, and James Hatcher, executive producer, Europe and the UK.

Compass Rose operates under a unique “umbrella model”, bringing together best-in-class service production companies in hand-picked destinations including Stillking Prague and Capetown, Icon Films Bulgaria and Romania, Entity Films Slovenia and Croatia, Nouri Films Spain and Tuna+Icon Serbia. With decades of production experience between the CR team and some of the most highly regarded production service partners in the world amongst their network, Compass Rose’s portfolio packs a punch. Between them they have worked on multi-award winning campaigns, music videos and branded content with the likes of Ridley Scott (RSA), Paul Thomas Anderson (Superprime), Ninian Doff (Pulse Films), Traktor (Stink) and Nicolai Fuglsig (MJZ)). and that is to name just a few. These celebrated production companies don’t work by halves, so why have they been tapping into Compass Rose and its network of partners?

A global outlook with a local approach

Compass Rose, as the name would suggest, has a truly global outlook – yet a distinctly local approach when it comes to worldwide filming and location sourcing. Brimming with local knowledge and experience, CR is in the business of inspiration. The company delights in subverting producers’ preconceived ideas on where best to place projects. That, however, is just a small part of what it can do for any production company that gives the CR team a call. Reaching out to CR will yield not only location suggestions and country-specific insights – fast – but also streamlining multiple country bidding processes, restrictions updates, and so much more. “We make the whole process of researching and bidding on international shoots much simpler and smoother, especially when there are multiple countries in play. Think of us like a boutique concierge with no fee. And no, there is no small print!” says Pavla. CR operates in three different time zones; between them, there is always a “local” on your time to reach out to.

But perhaps most intriguing is that this personalised and efficient approach comes at no cost to production companies as CR is fully financed by its network of trusted and tested service partners. CR takes a truly hands on approach to the process, hand-picking and curating each location suggestion with the utmost precision.

The crème de la crème of production and service

For Pavla Burgetova Callegari, CR’s MD and global executive producer, this is all in a day’s work. Prior to founding CR, Pavla built and managed production companies all over the world while producing numerous award-winning ads. Her strengths lie “in having a vision, creating a strategy for it, seeing it through, and staying ahead of industry changes to be able to quickly respond and pivot as needed for our clients.” As a “production veteran” she intimately understands the challenges facing production companies today. She’s also confident that Compass Rose has the solution to many of them and they’re only ever a call away. “There are two key elements that make what we do successful – the service companies in our network, which are all the very top players in their countries and my Compass Rose team – Amy Kaemon (US & Canada) and James Hatcher (EU & UK) who are not only really wonderful people to work with but complete the company with their wealth of knowledge and experience.”

Pavla adds: “Before joining CR, Amy was the head of production for Merman USA as well Supply & Demand. She also has a decade of experience under belt as a bidding producer, having worked at MJZ, Park Pictures, Anonymous Content, and Caviar, to name a few. Having spent many years on either side of the desk, Amy brings an invaluable North American lens to international production. What’s more, she’s held in exceptionally high regard by all the US production companies she works with.

James’s background is that of a seasoned line producer with ‘boots on the ground’ experience filming all over the world. He has a wealth of experience bidding and producing some of the UK and Europe’s top campaigns, like Nike, Adidas World Cup and the Euro Championship global campaigns. James combines his easy wit and well-earned wisdom with expansive international production know-how to support and assist the many UK and EU production companies who are looking for ideas, assistance, and advice.”

Drawing on intimate knowledge of the countries in their network and what they have to offer, it’s never just about destination. Want to know the best country for an underwater shoot or where to best replicate the streets of New York and London? CR is on it. Wondering which country has experts in special effects makeup? They’ll tell you. “No request is too big or too small,” reiterates Pavla. The close relationships CR have with its service partners is second nature, lending the company a family feel that, inevitably, translates into great work. “We have regular Zooms with our service companies to exchange notes on what’s new in the markets, updates on Covid restrictions, and share new locations, plus ideas on things like sustainability and inclusiveness,” says Pavla, adding: “Compass Rose would not exist without these amazing service companies and their teams. We are so lucky to be working with the crème de la crème of service companies on the market.”

CR’s outlook for the future is bright. Thanks to gradually easing travel restrictions, the company is pressing ahead, looking to expand into a couple more key territories and to grow their team, all while remaining focused on being an industry resource for production companies everywhere.  Despite the turbulence of the past year, Compass Rose has their next steps firmly mapped out.
