Students targeted as retailer becomes first in the UK to use the app as a marketing medium

Co-operative Electrical Launch Snapchat Campaign

The Co-operative Electrical has become the first major UK retailer to use Snapchat, the real-time picture chatting app, as a marketing medium. The Co-operative Electrical is targeting students with a new Snapchat campaign, devised by Holler, offering  £30 off their online price on its full range of laptops, which includes free delivery and an allocated 60-minute delivery slot.

Throughout September, as students prepare for the start of term, they can add The Co-operative Electrical as a friend on Snapchat.  The Co-operative then sends them a snap of a laptop and a promotional code offering £30 off any laptop. 

But they have to be quick, as the code self-destructs, Mission Impossible-style, in five to 10 seconds.

The campaign breaks this week and runs until October 11th. 

Gail Lyon, social media lead for The Co-operative Group, said: “It’s the first social campaign that The Co-operative Electrical has done, and the business is the first big retailer to market using Snapchat. Following this Snaptop campaign, we will be following up with two further social media campaigns, both with the intention of increasing awareness and consideration.”

Pete Jackson, Holler senior planner, said: “This is not about novelty. This is about targeting a specific audience using a platform they love, with something they need, at the time of year they need it.”
