Now you can watch cute animals doing weird stuff and do good at the same time. Sounds to good to be true? Not at all. Internet provider WAOO has launched a global initiative called Donate Your Data, which enables you to surf the Internet while supporting a charity of your choice.
WAOO has developed a browser plug-in for Google Chrome, which captures the data you generate when browsing, and then sells it to a trusted partner. All the earnings are then donated to a charity chosen by the user.
Big data companies already monitor, and store all your browsing behaviour, and make big bucks on it. The browser plug-in simply intervene this process, and gives control back to the user. What’s more important to highlight is the fact that Donate Your Data doesn’t gather any personal information (like your bank account, private messages nor does it increase advertising exposure). There really is no catch. You can indeed watch your cute animal videos and do good at the same time.
Now, why would an Internet provider launch a project of this scale? The Creative Director, Thomas Ilum, at the creative agency UncleGrey, explains: 'Waoo’s ambition is to help people to reach the full potential of the Internet with a best in class fiber Internet. We think Donate Your Data does just that. Surfing whatever you like online while you do good at the same time. Doesn't get much better.'
The project has been developed in a close collaboration with creative agency UncleGrey partnering up with WM Creative Labs and Xaxis.
