Los Angeles-based Boxer Films director Rodrigo Garcia Saiz stacks up a cross-genre TV “Battle Royal” for Charter out of Fallon, Minneapolis. The 60-second commercial features a sword-wielding hero from a medieval TV drama, a heavy-hitting baseball star, a larger-than-life fuzzy blue creature from a children’s show, a flesh-hungry zombie and a glamorous reality TV-show dancing duo battling it out in a no-holds-barred forest brawl.
“Battle Royal” opens on a soldier from the Middle Ages prepping his sword for battle against a baseball pro who’s poised in batter’s stance. The men charge each other. Sword and baseball bat clash as they ruthlessly engage in barbaric combat, only to be taken by a surprise double-takedown from an oversized blue creature. The monster’s success is only temporary, as the baseball player quickly retaliates, slugging him in the back. Another rival is added to the mix in the form of a zombie, who quickly doles out ruthless blows. After a rather unthreatening, though highly finessed entrance of bedazzled dancing partners, the chaos rages on in a flurry of blue fur, zombie flesh and medieval steel.
As the dancing diva aggressively yanks at the soldier’s long locks, a voiceover begins, “Your family’s favorite shows shouldn’t have to fight to be seen.” We cut to various household rooms where the characters appear in their appropriate settings on TV as the voiceover continues, “With Charter, you get four DVRs. So now every family member can watch what they want, when they want, where they want without any battles.” The spot closes with the Charter logo.
