Bobby Eccles – A Fresh Look for Food and Drink
Bobby Eccles is one of HUNGRYDORY’S exciting new directors that likes to take a fresh look at how food and drink is portrayed on our screens.
With a background in music composition and post-production, Bobby always brings his vision to life in a fun and modern way, no matter what the final platform of delivery is.
Having composed and produced music for shows such as Peaky Blinders, HBO's 'The Baby' and BBC's 'Inspector George Gently', his experience as a composer means he ‘thinks in sound’ and always layers that into what he shoots rather than just applying it after. This rhythmic beat is evident in the way he approaches each project and the humorously hypnotic images he conjures up as a director.
Bobby says: “For me editing film feels similar to producing music and sound, it’s all about pacing and figuring out how to clearly get your message across. They are so deeply connected that I believe music and film should always feed into each other seamlessly and not be an afterthought.”
His attention to detail and sense of fun in his visuals also belies his ability in post. As a skilled editor and AFX wizard he’s often two steps ahead on set. Knowing what he’s got and when he’s got it makes for some real magic on screen and ensures a smoother shoot with an easier route through post-production.
But his resourcefulness doesn’t end there. To help struggling music venues during the height of the pandemic he and his DoP housemate, Matt Butler shot campaigns for 'Fight Back Lager' in their own living room. They created virtual backgrounds on their TV and Bobby even recorded the voiceover himself.
Conceptualising and designing quirky, bold, and interesting shots as a creative really complete his toolkit as a director and sets him as resourceful ally in the world of content creation.
“I simply love working with the team at HungryDory. They are so supportive and are providing me with a playground to explore more creative possibilities in my work. As a filmmaker and general creator I have always enjoyed a good old 'shitty rig'...but usually only out of necessity. With the resources and expertise at Hunky Dory I can now take my work to new levels. We are keeping creativity paramount without the need for excessive commercial production procedures, making fun content more achievable and affordable. Although I’d still like the odd ‘shitty rig’ or two thrown in now and then just for fun.”
Although predominately a specialist in a world where portrait beats landscape, Bobby is also now attracting attention in the world of the TVC and is making a bright and bold start for himself.
