Jelly London talks to Creative Director & EP Mael Francois

Paris-based hyper-creative and superbly techy animation crew Blackmeal had a blip of free time and decided to pay tribute to Game of Thrones by making a dedicated short animation.

Creative Director and executive producer Mael Francois tells us more about it.

What do you love most about Game of Thrones?

As motion directors we love the opening title for a start! Some of us are big readers and fans of the books, and the series manages to make us love or hate many of the different characters. In terms of rhythm and storyline there isn’t a moment to get bored or confused. This is important to motion designers as rhythm is usually everything in this type of work. And George RR Martin’s writing always keeps us on our toes: it’s unpredictable – especially in terms of life and death. He also manages to create a very credible universe and very human characters, which is fairly rare in fantasy and sci-fi TV drama (kudos to the writers at HBO managing to get everything on screen).

You are known for your 3D and CGI work. Which techniques did you use to create this tribute, and why?

We wanted to try a different style and way of working lately, which is why we decided to go towards a flat design with puppet animation and concentrate on each scene as an independent illustration. This is the main reason why the animation is light: we wanted to focus on the environments and situations more than the characters. Game of Thrones characters drive the story, but to a very dramatic and beautiful backdrop full of impressive scenery, and that’s what we’re highlighting here.

What are you looking forward to in the new season?

We can't wait to come back to Westeros and see how the writers and designers are going to interpret and translate Martin's book on screen, and we are looking for a few big moments but... no spoilers!
