The competition heated up on a cold and snowy Monday as adland’s most dedicated soup nerds gathered in a London pub to show off their culinary skills. The 11th Annual Adland Soup Off brought together a whopping 17 entrants, with Mark Denton, CharlyInc founder Charly Massey. Karmarama’s Head of Creative Delivery Danny Bayliss and LBB’s very own Laura Swinton putting their taste buds into overdrive as the judges.
Taking the coveted Golden(ish) Ladle and bespoke Soup Off apron was BBH Direct’s Tom Skinner, who impressed the judges and audience with his silky Truffled Black Garlic and Shiitake Mushroom Soup. Anomaly’s Nicky Russell came a very close second with Thai Red Curry Chicken Noodle Soup and Mad Ruffian’s Amanda Jones, third place with California Beer Cheese.
Alas it was not all soupy smiles as BBH Sport founder Ewan Paterson and Tony Bull found themselves relegated for two years after coming bottom with their Nordic Onion and Cider soup and Smoked Trout, Cockle, and Cream Cheese soup respectively.
The event was organised by Smoke & Mirrors’ Mickey Brooks, a tireless devotee of good soup. Mickey can be seen in
the launch film from Mad Ruffian. If you haven’t seen it, it’s a sort of mashup of Sexy Beast and Masterchef.
The total of funds raised is still being counted, but Tom’s charity is for Child Leukaemia. Each entrant paid a £20 entry fee, the brewery donated a barrel of beer, the proceeds of each pint sold which went into the collection, there was a raffle and general collection for Tom’s chosen charity.
