Recognised across several projects, Banjoman’s wins demonstrate an ability to take creative risks and excel regardless of budget

For a second year in a row, Banjoman has been awarded Irish Production Company of the Year at the Kinsale Shark Awards. In addition to this top accolade, the production company was rewarded in the main for its work on three different films, demonstrating consistent quality and bold creativity across multiple campaigns.

Banjoman’s touching films for Weir & Sons, which highlight the deeper meaning that jewellery often holds, were awarded Silver for Best Child Direction in ‘The Watch’ and Bronze for Best Direction in ‘The Locket’. Their work on ‘Homeless. Not Less’, Dublin Simon Community’s raw and authentic portrait of those with experience of homelessness, was awarded Bronze for Best Direction.

These campaigns not only earned Banjoman the consecutive Irish Production Company of the Year title, but demonstrate the artistically brave approach inherent to the company’s ethos. Having always been a creative-first company, the team has proven that a willingness to think outside the box and take risks for inventive storytelling will continually pay off. Prioritising creative progression and original perspectives, the company is capable of producing high quality work with small budgets and resources - whilst ensuring content still resonates emotionally.

Visually arresting, all three campaigns were also shot in 16mm - a first for director Dermot Malone - with both ‘The Watch’ and ‘The Locket’ captured in a single take. Creating a grainy, unfiltered overlay, the aesthetic enhances the palpable depth of feeling that makes each spot a winner, and epitomises the bold creative choices that Banjoman constantly makes.

Dermot Malone, director at Banjoman, comments: “It’s a real honour to have won this award two years running, and it proves that we haven’t rested on our laurels in the last 12 months. We’re still striving to create great work and craft exciting scripts regardless of the client or the resources we have. We’ve also been lucky to have amazing collaborators who buy into our vision at every turn. We care deeply about what we do and prioritise great work, regardless of the bottom line. In my mind, that leads to the best outcome.”

He adds: “All these amazing campaigns and accolades wouldn’t be possible without our incredible team. Our DOP Luke Jacobs worked across all these films and brought everything I had in my head to life through 16mm - something I hadn’t worked with before. I also want to shout out Matt D’Arcy, Vanessa Briscoe, Liam Boyd, and Eva Malone, who all make up our brilliant, close-knit team. Eva even makes an appearance in ‘The Locket’!’

Looking ahead, Banjoman has more exciting news on the horizon, having teased a new, different side of the business. Beyond that, the team will continue to seek out creative opportunities wherever they can find them, securing creatively challenging scripts for their growing roster, which now stands at nine directors.
