Canadian agency Angry Butterfly has capped its third anniversary with a prestigious AOR win for Porsche Canada. Beyond working in an exciting and innovative category, Porsche represents so much more for the young agency.
2023 was already filled with positivity for Angry Butterfly. The team had won Golds at Cannes Lions, Clios, One Show pencils and a number of Best of Shows at local Canadian awards. Then Porsche got in touch to ask the team to pitch their business.
“We immediately felt it was a great fit, as there are a lot of parallels," says Erin Kawalecki, partner and CCO. "We’re not, of course, a globally renowned and iconic automaker celebrating its 75th anniversary, but we believe in the magic that comes from high performing, beautifully crafted works of art. Porsche’s vision is to be a brand for those who follow their dreams. Starting our own agency in the pursuit of creating things for the world that capture people’s imagination is something we believe is very much akin to Porsche.”
Erin, along with fellow partners Brent Choi, CEO, and Graham Candy, CSO, formed the agency in the late fall of 2020. The Porsche win is a testament to being on the right track - no pun intended. With a number of new business wins over the past year, Angry Butterfly has grown to over 40 people, and now rosters an impressive client list to go along with Porsche including Dairy Farmers of Canada, Co-operators (Investment & Insurance), Gibson’s Finest Whisky, Canadian Tire, Havergal College, Jays Care Foundation, IMAX, Ivey Business School and others.
Winning a premium OEM automotive account has always been one of our goals, as we collectively have such great experience within the auto industry,” says Brent. “We really admire how Porsche has always stayed true to who they are. A great lesson for our agency as we continue to grow and evolve.”
“We have built some incredible bench strength, with capabilities that extend beyond what most agencies can do,” adds Graham. “And through it all, continue to move at the speed of culture with agility being a cornerstone to how we keep our clients on the forefront of where consumers are going. At the same time, it allows us to experiment, innovate and try new things, which is also an integral part of our DNA.”
Along with added capabilities, Angry Butterfly’s wins have allowed them to bring in more top tier talent, including one of Canada’s best senior producers with the hire of Hanna Bratt as head of production, and award winning VP creative directors, Adam Notzer-Keyser and Bernice Lo. “They have fundamentally changed what we are able to do, going from a start-up to a leadership team that has incredible fire power across the board,” says Erin.
After a remarkable three year run to get to this point, Angry Butterfly begins its partnership with a Porsche brand that has incredibly high expectations, as it always has had through its history. This is perfect for Erin, Graham, and Brent, as no brand or organisation has higher expectations than the three of them.
