Amy Yonemoto: An Interview with MassiveMusic Tokyo's Project Manager
Meet Amy, MassiveMusic Tokyo’s new Project Manager. She previously worked as Head of International Artist Relations at local online radio block.fm owned by legendary J-pop producer Taku Takahashi, where she booked and interviewed over 100 artists, curated radio shows and produced events. With almost seven years of experience in the music industry, Amy shares some of her highlights from the past few years as well as her goals for MassiveMusic.
Q> This MassiveMusic series is called ‘A Cup of Coffee with’ which sounds like rituals and deep conversations. What’s a good habit you’ve formed in the last year?
Amy> I’ve made it a habit to wake up early. This gives me time to organise the day as well as enjoy my coffee.
Q> Do you still remember your first approach with music?
Amy> My dad was a musician and even now there’s a corner in our house with all of his synthesisers. I vividly remember ‘Rydeen’ by Yellow Magic Orchestra playing at home. I think that what he used to play subtly influenced me.
Q> When did you start thinking about working in the music industry?
Amy> I happened to be babysitting for my previous boss who is a legendary producer in Japan. If you have the chance, please check out his group m-flo. Around the time when we had to start internships during university, I asked him if he had any available positions for me at block.fm. Working there really deepened my interest in music.
Q> Any anecdotes about your beginnings at MassiveMusic?
Amy> I was at my previous job for about seven years (including my internship) and felt like I needed a new challenge. That's when my dear friend Sayaka introduced me to the company! Very grateful to have her guide me through this industry that’s new to me.
Q> What did you do at your previous job? What projects have you worked on?
Amy> It was a small company so I did a little bit of everything, but my two main roles saw me working as head of international relations and social media director. Some of my biggest projects include producing Porter Robinson’s Second Sky Festival 2019 Japan Recap Movie and creative directing and writing the interviews for the Summer Sonic 2019 official IGTV series. I also had the chance to host AMY.FM, my own radio show, where I introduced tracks I was listening to and invited my friends for a chat!
Q> You have such an interesting career, collaborating with world-famous artists and even being a radio personality yourself. What are some of the most memorable episodes you recall?
Amy> Thank you! There are so many that it’s really hard to choose… having my own radio show was really fun because I got a chance to interview some of my really talented friends. On top of that, Baths, JIIN, Holodec, and Nosaj Thing were guests on the show and they are all artists I loved from before, so that was surreal. I also loved doing the CHATROOM series as the interviews were set to be funny and I was always laughing during the recordings. All of the interviews were great, but if I had to choose a few favourites it would be the episodes with Sam Tiba and CHVRCHES’ Lauren Mayberry.

「A Cup of Coffee with」シリーズにちなんで、まずはこの質問から。この１年で身につけたいい習慣はありますか？
早起きするようにしてる。1日をどんな日にするか処理ができて、コーヒーもゆっくり飲むことができる。
音楽に興味を持つきっかけになったことは？
初めての仕事までに真剣に音楽の興味を持ってなかったけど、お父さんが昔ミュージシャンで今でも実家に彼のシンセサイザーが飾ってある。YMOの「Rydeen」がお家で流れているのは覚えている。彼がかけてた音楽が今の趣味（興味？）に影響あると思う。
音楽業界での仕事に興味を持ち始めたのは、いつ頃ですか？
前のボスの子供のベビーシッターをしてて前職に入社することになりました。ちょうど大学生の時にインターンシップを始める頃になって、彼の会社に空いてるポジションがないかを聞いて入社したことをきっかけに、音楽業界に興味を持ち始めました。
MassiveMusicに入社したときのエピソードがあれば教えてください。
インターンシップを含めて前職では約７年働いてて、新しいチャレンジが欲しかった。そんな時にタイミングよく昔から仲良しのさやかが紹介してくれた！新しい業界なので彼女に色々サポートしてもらえて心強い。
前職では何をしていましたか？これまで手がけたプロジェクトについて教えてください。
小さい会社だったからいろんなことをやってたけど、メインの役割が海外アーティストのコンテンツ担当とSNSの担当。いろんなプロジェクトを手がけた中で最も達成感を感じたのは、Porter Robinson’s Second Sky Festival 2019の公式日本アフタームービー制作担当と、Summer Sonic 2019の公式IGTVインタビューのクリエイティブを担当したことです。その他に、自分のラジオ「AMY.FM」もやらせて頂いて、好きな音楽を紹介しながら友達を呼んでインタビューしてました。
世界的に有名なアーティストとコラボレーションしたり、自身でラジオパーソナリティーを務めたりと面白い経歴をお持ちですね。これまでさまざまなプロジェクトを手がけてきて、最も印象に残っているエピソードはありますか？
ありがとう！多くて絞るのが難しいけど... 友達を何人かインタビューできて、自分のラジオ番組を務めるのは結構楽しかった。みんな才能ありすぎて、それについて話し始めるとこのインタビューが終わらない。よかったみんなの活動をチェックしてください。その上に、前から大好きだったBaths、 JIIN、HolodecとNosaj Thingもゲストに呼べて最高だった。
もう一つ印象的な企画は、CHATROOMというランダムな質問を投げる企画。撮影の時ずっと笑ってた印象が残ってる。全エピソード面白かったけど、オススメなのはとんだ林蘭さんとモーリー・ロバートソンさんです。
