American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), the long standing national organization that has played a role in some of the most historic civil liberty events in U.S. history, called upon Seattle ad agency Wexley School for Girls to help raise awareness of ACLU among teens and young adults in a fun tongue in cheek way. Enter multi-platinum recording artist, Macklemore, whose music serves as a creative platform to address controversial civil rights topics as he did with the hit single “Same Love,” which was written in support of REF 74 to legalize marriage equality in Washington state.
In a spinoff of the old AmEx ads that used celebrities to sell memberships, Macklemore’s promo for ACLU ‘sells’ the new ACLU membership cards and encourages America’s younger demographic to join the ACLU. Wexley also gave ACLU’s website a fresh new look that will appeal to millennials. The video and website launched today with a Tweet by Macklemore.
