Amazon Music is paying tribute to hip-hop’s monumental influence on music, culture, and society with 50 & Forever, a program in celebration of hip-hop’s 50th anniversary, which will bring fans together to honour hip-hop’s undeniable legacy and champion the artists writing the next 50 years of hip-hop’s history. Created by Rotation - the hip-hop and R&B brand from Amazon Music - in collaboration with creative agency Droga5, 50 & Forever will give hip-hop its well-deserved flowers, with curated events, livestreams, playlists, original content, and new music - spanning Amazon Music, Twitch, Audible, Prime Video, and Amp.
The celebration will feature some of the most important names in hip-hop, from hip-hop’s Golden Era through present day, including J. Cole and Dreamville, Mary J. Blige, Queen Latifah, Jeezy, Busta Rhymes, Method Man, Jadakiss, DJ Drama, Jodeci, Free Marie, and Kenny Burns. Many more events and featured artists will be announced throughout 2023.
“This year, hip-hop fans around the world will come together to mark one of the culture’s most important milestones: the 50th anniversary of hip-hop,” said Tim Hinshaw, head of hip-hop and R&B for Amazon Music. “More than music, hip-hop has broken barriers and redefined culture across fashion, sports, film, and social movements. From art to activism, hip-hop hasn’t just changed history, but is history, and 50 & Forever pays tribute to the indelible mark that hip-hop has made on the culture.”
To kick off 50 & Forever, Amazon Music, in partnership with creative agency Droga5, has released Generational Queens, the first in an ongoing series of short films that will be released throughout the year from Amazon Music. Directed by Fenn O’Meally and featuring a Black, all-female cast, the film is centred around the first lady of hip-hop, Queen Latifah, and her ground breaking, respect-demanding feminist anthem ‘U.N.I.T.Y.’ - which turns 30 this year. The film captures the journey of music discovery and shows that when hip-hop fandom starts at home, it carries on for generations.
“The film captures a moment when two teenage daughters discover a side of their mother they’ve never seen before when they uncover a box that reveals their mother’s love of hip-hop back in the day and how that love is still as strong as ever today. From her fashion sense to her swag, we showcase how Hip-Hop fandom runs deep whether it began 30 years ago or today – the culture is here to stay,” says Courtney Richardson, creative director at Droga5.
