Luke Franklin wins 2013 Nova; Unilever Magic Award & Azul Award also announced

It was a night of bothies, bullying and beautiful aromas on at the 2013 Nova Awards, created by Lowe and Partners and hosted by the network's Chairman, Tony Wright.

The main prize of the night, The Nova Award, went to Luke Franklin, a student on Central St Martin’s Art & Science M.A. course. He was awarded for his 4 Bothies project which has seen him construct four shelters in secret locations in rural Ireland. Each of the bothy also represents a different function in the artistic process: a library, a study, a studio and a gallery. He was inspired by George Mallory, who tried to climb Everest in 1924 but died in the attempt.

“Bothies are found in remote, mountainous areas of the Scottish Highlands, they offer rare shelter in some of the most remote environments in the British Isles and have saved many lives. Spartan and barely more than shacks these structures are quite beautiful, not just because of how they look and where they are but because of the respite they offer, straddling the line between life and death,” explained Franklin.

The Nova 2013 Runners up are Colin O’ Dowd for his Product Design project, STIX Children’s toys and James Beatham for his project  for his BA in Fine Art XD Pathway ‘Proposed Solo Show’.

The Unilever Magic Award went to Amy Radcliffe, a recent graduate of Central St Martin’s MA in Textiles Futures. Her project ‘Scent-Ography – a Post Visual Past Time’  - explored the relationship between aroma and memory by creating what she describes as ‘an analogue odour camera’.

Speaking about the inspiration and motivation behind this project, Radcliffe said: “Our sense of smell is believed to have the most direct link to our emotional memory. It is the sense that we react to most instinctually and is also the sense that is furthest away from being stored or replicated digitally. From ambient smell-scapes to the utterly unique scent of an individual, our scent memory is a valuable resource yet to be systematically captured and archived.”

The evening also saw the presentation of the inaugural Azul Award. The award recognises outstanding creativity within the Lowe network and is awarded to a campaign by a Lowe team.

Lowe’s President of its Creative Council, Jose Miguel Sokoloff travelled from Colombia to present the award to Rickard Villard, ECD of Lowe Brindfors Stockholm for ‘Bullying Simulator’ a digital campaign aimed at tackling cyber bullying. The client is Friends, an organisation committed to educating parents of both bullies and the bullied.
