2018 marked 100 years since the end of the First World War.

But despite the faded photographs and aged letters we hold dear, for many it is almost impossible to imagine what life was really like.

The handwritten accounts of young soldiers are worlds away from how we communicate today.

At a time when the poppy as a symbol has become a heated topic of debate, Texts From The Trenches is a memorial that aimed to reconnect younger generations with remembrance of the 1,117,077 commonwealth men and women who died during WW1, at a time when young people are more disconnected than ever.

Taking the real letters of those who served, and reframing them as text messages, our aim was to reach through the fog of time and pull these service men and women into the modern world, so they can regain their humanity once more.

Through instagram and twitter we posted a text a day in the lead up to Remembrance Sunday, creating a hub of messages from the First World War. This was supported by digital screens at universities and student unions across the country as well as posters around the capital.

The memorial reached tens of thousands of individuals online, and with media coverage across the globe, Texts From The Trenches encouraged people to rethink the way that brave service men and women are remembered.

Rather than being thought of as the Charlie Chaplin-type figures in B&W photographs and archive film, we made their real stories and lives accessible and relatable to a younger generation, and showed that even though a century has passed, we haven’t really changed much at all.
