UNIT9's A Common Future and Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations raise awareness of the threat of desertification to the global ecosystem

In honour of yesterday's World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought, UNIT9 director collective A Common Future have shared a haunting new short film that’s meant to warn the creative community about the dangers of climate change.

The film was created by UNIT9 director collective, A Common Future (ACF), who are known for their documentary expertise and passion for environmental conservation. Launched in partnership with the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations, ‘In Dust’ raises awareness for the threat desertification poses to the global ecosystem. Desertification - when fertile land becomes desert as a result of climate change and overexploitation - is on its way to becoming a global emergency that could force over 200 million people to abandon their homes and migrate to safer land in the coming years.

In the film, the viewer is guided through the deserts of Senegal and Southern Spain by a graceful, yet haunting, moving entity. The strong visuals and chilling performance leave the audience with desertification top of mind, pushing them to research and help fix this growing problem.

"This film is an experiment, and an attempt at finding new roads to reach new audiences and raise awareness in different ways. We knew we wanted to do something genre-expanding and combine our documentarian side with our more artistic, expressionistic impulses. Desertification just clicked with us, it felt like our voice could legitimately contribute to raising awareness here, because it is in itself an abstract process, going on over years, reshaping landscapes and lives. Hopefully we have created something that leaves people with a curiosity to learn more about this term and to talk to their social circles about it." said Tom Elliott and Simon Reichel (A Common Future).
