Park Pictures director shares his highlights of 2012

It's been an all-singing, all-dancing year as far as director Nathan Price is concerned. In spring, the New Zealander shot  the epic sing-along Break My Stride... and then Gangnam Style happened. We caught up with the Park Pictures director about his 2012 highlights.

LBB>What was in your letter to Santa this year?

NP> I thought the rule is that if you tell anyone you won’t get it?

LBB> Naughty or Nice?

NP> Mainly nice unfortunately… umm, oh actually…

LBB> What’s been the best project you’ve been involved in this year and why?

NP> State Insurance ‘Break my stride’. Dumbness and scale, with a tight gang (agency, crew and client) who I’d worked with before so the trust was high. Fun.

LBB> Aside from anything you’ve worked on, what’s been your favourite piece of advertising of the year and why?

NP> ‘Dumb Ways to Die’ for the Melbourne Metro – Catchy, dumb, macabre, super watchable, great writing, nice execution and it works, as in it delivers its message payload.

LBB> Favourite book, film and album of 2012?

NP> Book: I don’t really read new releases. So old but new for me ‘Maus’ the graphic novel by Art Spiegelman. Oh and ‘Fun Home’, also a graphic novel by Alison Bechdel. I don’t usually read graphic novels but I took the time to read someone’s top ten and these were stand out.

Film:  ‘End of Watch’ by David Ayer. It’s just a cop movie, but the characterisation is brilliant, and it’s still really fun and actiony. Sort of a modern French Connection, but more emotionally engaging. Emotional in a manly kind of way, though my girlfriend liked it too; (so many paradoxes!). The Master by PT Anderson hasn’t come out here in Paris yet, but I’m jazzed, so hopefully that’s the best film I haven’t seen in 2012.

Album:  ‘The English Riviera’ – Metronomy. It came out last year but I’m always a little slow on the uptake. I had a few of the singles, as you do. But it’s actually a really great album. By that I mean listening to It the whole way through, like a fine meal kind of thing.

LBB> Personal highlight of 2012?

NP> Getting my French to a level where I can give a little bit of shit back to pedantic and underemployed French bureaucrats.

LBB>… and what’s been the worst thing about 2012?

NP> Apple maps, war or poverty… it’s hard to decide.

LBB> Most significant/exciting development of the last 12 months?

Obama II? Syrian Revolution? Higgs Boson? No. July 15 is the September 11 of 2012. The day Gangnam Style hit the tube. It has hit 1 billion views now; a guy singing in Korean and line dancing to techno. It means something, right?

LBB> Any New Year’s Resolutions?

NP> More dancing, less thinking.

LBB> Predictions for 2013?

NP> Africa.
