Posh Boy is a self-funded Insta-Series of seventeen films (so far) capturing the lives and struggles of London's inner city boxing community at Carney’s Community Centre and Fitzroy Lodge – it’s a portrait of their aspirations and achievements against the odds.   The latest film features South London born Stormzy, meeting  up and coming boxer Dante.   Watch all the films HERE and @poshboydoc.

Marshall Street Editor Toby Conway-Hughes was approached about the project by his long-time collaborator director Caswell Coggins in early 2019.  Caswell had recently teamed up with director Kevin Lee Brown to co-direct what they had initially planned to be a long form documentary.  Toby was already a massive fan of boxing, and has always had a passion for making films that focus on real people and real life stories, so it didn't take him a second to sign up.

Focusing on four boxers as central characters, filming began with interviews and training sessions, as well as being ring side to get intimate coverage of their amateur and professional bouts. Unfortunately some way into the schedule Coronavirus hit and changed everything. The pandemic would pose a serious threat to the community at the heart of Posh Boy.

As Caswell explains 'We faced a simple choice, ride it out or see where it could creatively take us and be able in our way to support this community under threat. As our purpose had always been to shine a light on the boxing community we'd been following, we felt compelled to document their journeys through these testing times. So, we chose the latter and set about re-purposing our rushes to transform them into an Instagram web series”.

A big proportion of Toby’s time has been spent cutting the dialogue bed for each edit.  From hours of great interview footage, he tries to tell a concise story in 60 seconds, cutting two films each week for release.  I find it fascinating and really inspiring listening to the boxers and community workers talk and I've burnt the midnight oils editing these films throughout lockdown.  By day I've been home schooling my 5 and 6-year-old kids and then, as soon as they are in bed, I jump in front of the computer and start cutting.  I'll often edit whilst sharing my Avid output on Zoom with Caswell and Kevin.  It's a really efficient way of working when you can't be in the same room.  We've also had a great team on this for grade and music.  I think we've all just been really happy to be able to stay creative and involved in film making throughout lockdown”.

The films are gathering momentum on social media and both Toby and Marshall Street Editors are proud to be on board as a key contributor to a project that is focused on supporting such important communities and look forward to seeing where the journey takes them.
