Manchester is situated in the south-central part of North West England. Its recorded history began with a civilian settlement associated with the Roman fort of Mamucium, established in around 79 AD near the meeting point of the rivers Medlock and Irwell. It straddles the counties of Lancashire and Cheshire. The city expanded rapidly during the Industrial Revolution, when it became a centre for textile manufacture, making it the world’s first industrialised city. It was the global centre for the cotton trade, and much if the city’s buildings date back from this period. Manchester’s architecture ranges from Victorian to contemporary and it is known for its widespread use of red brick.

The North of England has much to offer for filming locations, from coastline to cities, country houses to national parks. It also boasts experienced crews and facilities. It is also one of the most cost effective places to shoot in the UK and has good transport links to London and elsewhere in the country. It has a strong history in filming and production, with one of the nation’s best loved programmes, “Coronation Street” filmed here as well as major productions such as Sherlock Holmes and Captain America. It is home to MediaCityUK, a 200 acre site which will be home to over 1,000 media related businesses including a massive high definition studio facility. Film Commissions and Creative England can assist with advice and support with permissions, locations, crews and more.

getting around

The country has an extensive rail system and so Manchester is connected to London and other cities by rail. A high speed link to London is currently in the planning phase and a huge refurbishment is underway to make Manchester the rail hub of the north of the UK.

Manchester is served by a modern light rail tram network, called the Metrolink. It currently consists of three lines and 37 stations but a plan is underway to extend it to include 4 new lines and have at least 99 stops. The city also has an extensive bus system, with over 50 bus companies in operation.
